Ilford TTL - News Articles 2013/14

The following articles are as submitted to the Ilford Recorder. (Not necessarily as published!)

Please Note the frequency of these articles can only be increased if players (not necessarily Captains) send information about matches to Ray Brown. He's after interesting facts that can't be deduced from the scorecard, eg. great comebacks, miracle escapes, etc. He'll write the article, but a twist in the story always helps!

In the final week of the Ilford league tournament, there were three events.

The Open Doubles event was run as a “Round Robin”, with each pair playing every other pair. The final brought together the top two seeds, Kamil Hajdrych and Bartek Kazmierczak, the top seeds, against Lukasz Lewandowski and Sujay Jagannathan.

The first three games were very close, with Lukasz and Sujay winning the first two, both by the score of 11-9. Kamil and Bartek won the third game 11-9 then stepped up a gear to win the fourth game 11-4

In the deciding game, Lukasz and Sujay held the lead throughout, winning by 11-6 to take the title.

Lukasz also graced the final of the Handicap Singles, where he was on a zero handicap. His opponent was Colin Henderson from division two, whose handicap was 17. The Handicap event is the best of three games up to thirty-three points. Lukasz won the first game 33-26 but then found the pressure of overcoming a seventeen point handicap quite demanding as Colin won the second game 33-27. In the deciding game, Colin won a few early points which seemed to demoralise Lukasz, who was now tiring from a demanding match and Colin won the final game 33-10.

In the Veterans Singles, Colin Green beat Ray Brown 12-10, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6

In the Ilford league tournament, there were two events held this week. In the Open Singles, the top seeds fell by the wayside and the final was between 4th seed Matt Spero and Adrian Harabagiu, seeded 7. The first game was a win for Adrian, who had several nets and edges in his favour in his 11-8 victory.

In the second game, Matt was guilty of over-hitting his shots and found himself 10-3 down. He won the next three points but then a shot from Adrian to the far right corner clipped the corner edge to give him an 11-6 win.

The third game was very close with the players scoring evenly until 9-9. At this point, Matt’s luck changed and he claimed an edge of his own to go 10-9 up with the next point also going his way to make it 11-9.

In the next game, Matt really had his eye in as he won 11-7 to set up a fifth game decider, which he won 11-8 to become Ilford champion.

In the Division 2&3 Singles, number one seed Josh Dye was in a class above the rest as he reached the final where he beat Colin Green 14-12, 14-12, 11-8.

Report

Runaway Division 2 leaders, Mossford 3 were defeated for the first time this season, when they were beaten 6-3 by Woodford Wells 3. Mossford were missing their injured number one, Josh Dye, which had a significant impact on their defeat. However, they still lead the division by a huge sixteen points.

3 October 2013

One of the favourites for the Ilford division 2 title, Mossford 3, visited Woodford Wells 3 and came away with a 7-3 victory. However, things did not go according to plan as Wells won the first three singles.

Firstly, Harry Fox beat Josh Dye in four games. Then, in a marathon lasting fifty minutes, Stuart Spurling beat Dennis Sweeney 13-11 in the fifth and deciding game. It looked as if Mossford’s Mike Harris would redress the balance as he won the first two games against Mike Ward. However, Ward fought back, winning the next three games, finally winning the fifth game by 16-14.

After this, however, it was all Mossford, although Ward only lost to Dye in the fifth game and Spurling was too exhausted to play Harris and conceded.
